Data sharing technology leader Datavant has announced its acquisition of Aetion, a company specializing in real-world evidence (RWE) within the healthcare sector. This strategic move aims to integrate the strengths of both companies to create a comprehensive, end-to-end RWE platform.

Combining Strengths for Advanced RWE

The merger is set to enable healthcare and life sciences organizations to more effectively address crucial research inquiries regarding the clinical effectiveness of therapies, both during development and once they are commercially available. Datavant’s established platform facilitates the secure and efficient movement of healthcare data across over 70,000 hospitals and clinics. Aetion, conversely, has built a reputation for providing sophisticated RWE solutions to a diverse clientele including biopharmaceutical firms, medical device manufacturers, payers, and regulatory bodies.

By combining their respective capabilities, the unified entity plans to offer a complete suite of services encompassing data discovery, linkage, privacy measures, data curation, and advanced analytical tools. This integrated offering will empower their ecosystem partners in the life sciences industry to derive actionable insights based on robust analytics.

Enhancing Platform Capabilities

The acquisition follows Datavant’s recent introduction of Datavant Connect, a service leveraging AWS Clean Rooms to streamline cloud-based data discovery and evaluation, thereby accelerating the time it takes to gain insights. Datavant Connect is designed to facilitate the combination of disparate data sources.

According to statements from both companies, Aetion’s expertise will significantly enhance Datavant Connect’s data discovery functionalities, strengthen privacy protocols, and provide customers with access to valuable datasets and advanced analytics capabilities. Additionally, Aetion’s flagship product, the Aetion Evidence Platform, is slated to become accessible through the AWS Marketplace.

Arnaub Chatterjee, President and General Manager of life sciences, ecosystem, and public sector at Datavant, highlighted the increasing need to derive meaningful insights from real-world data. He stated that by integrating Datavant’s and Aetion’s complementary strengths, the combined company will be well-equipped to deliver novel tools for assessing data feasibility, querying information, conducting evaluations, and ultimately promoting equitable data access. Chatterjee expressed particular excitement about offering customers innovative approaches to analyze and leverage data for resolving complex challenges across the entire product lifecycle, from pre-commercialization through post-market analysis.

Industry Context and Previous Activities

This acquisition takes place amid a broader trend of increasing reliance on real-world data in healthcare and life sciences. Earlier in May 2025, Datavant expanded its partnership with pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim to support the latter’s RWE initiatives. This extended collaboration aims to apply Datavant’s data tokenization and connectivity technologies to enhance clinical development and launch strategies across 75 additional clinical trials and numerous new molecular entities.

Boehringer Ingelheim intends to deepen the integration of real-world data into its drug development processes by utilizing Datavant’s technology across a wider portfolio of trials and launches.

Looking back at recent history, in 2023, Socially Determined partnered with Datavant to provide life sciences companies with data related to social determinants of health, aiming to improve health equity and patient outcomes. In 2021, MindMed also turned to Datavant to facilitate the linking of its clinical trial data with external evidence sources, including other trials and real-world data.

Datavant’s growth trajectory includes securing $40 million in Series B funding in 2020, led by Transformation Capital with participation from notable investors such as Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJDC), Cigna Ventures, Roivant Sciences, and Flex Capital. In the same year, Datavant completed a significant acquisition of Ciox Health in a deal valued at $7.0 billion, a move aimed at improving patient outcomes and reducing costs by removing barriers to secure health data exchange.

Aetion has also been active in forging key collaborations and making strategic acquisitions. In 2023, Aetion partnered with the FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE). The OCE utilized the Aetion Evidence Platform to identify and analyze real-world data sources applicable to research in cancer prevention, clinical care, diagnostics, and treatment. This collaboration, scheduled to continue until 2027, focused on assessing real-world endpoints, measuring healthcare disparities, and evaluating causal inference methodologies.

In 2022, Aetion expanded its capabilities in synthetic RWE through the acquisition of Replica Analytics. This acquisition followed Aetion’s successful $110 million Series C funding round in the same year, led by Warburg Pincus, which aimed to support the company’s global expansion efforts.
